Zelensky sends proposal to Russia for next peace talks

Zelensky sends proposal to Russia for next peace talks

In the past five months, representatives of Ukraine and Russia have held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, Turkey. These meetings mainly focused on the exchange of prisoners. However, there has been no progress in talks to end the nearly three-and-a-half-year-old war. In his speech, Zelensky said that everything necessary should be done for a ceasefire. Russia must stop avoiding decisions.

Zelensky said that the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umerov, had sent a proposal for the next meeting to Russia. However, he did not provide any details about the meeting.

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Umerov was appointed head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council last week. He is tasked with accelerating the talks.

Russian forces are continuing their offensive in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly said it is ready to resume talks. But Kiev and its allies say Russia is not yet ready to end the war. Instead, it is desperate to achieve its “ultimate goal” in the war.

In this situation, US President Donald Trump recently issued a warning to Russia. Earlier this month, Trump said that if Russia does not agree to a peace deal within 50 days, tougher sanctions will be imposed on Russia.
